The region has adopted recovery goals, which are the wild fish population targets that fish managers are trying to achieve to stave off extinction and return wild fish to abundance. Wild fish returning to wild places, not hatchery fish, are protected under the Endangered Species Act, and these are the populations to watch. In an effort to protect and restore these fish, Snake River wild salmon and steelhead were placed on the endangered species list. Since the construction of dams, runs have dramatically declined. The Snake River used to have salmon runs that exceeded a million fish.
